A Surprise for Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods FisherTitle: A Surprise for Lily
Author: Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher
Series: The Adventures of Lily Lapp book 4
Major Themes: Amish, Family Life, Pennsylvania
Synopsis: A little Amish girl continues learning about life as she enjoys her family and school.

We very much enjoyed the series of books about Lily Lapp, a little Amish girl in Pennsylvania. A Surprise for Lily wraps up the series nicely. This book tells the story of the year in which Lily was ten, turning eleven. Much happened during that year!

One main theme throughout this book is Dozer, the dog that Lily’s little brother rescued. What a nuisance that dog turned out to be! You will be amazed at the resolution to this conflict, and at Lily’s father’s response to one of the problems the dog created.

Lily also has to contend with Aaron Yoder, who has been a problem ever since she started school in this community. Now, another boy has moved into the area who also makes life hard for her. How can she cope with two horrible boys in her class?

On the other hand, Mama’s disappearing garden boot leads to a fun adventure for Lily and Joseph. When they follow their dog into the woods, they discover an old Indian and gain a new friend.

Not everything during this year makes Lily happy, although Grandpa Lapp’s death means that she can learn to know her cousins. The chicken pox makes life hard for awhile, and so does a teacher who can’t teach English. Her best friend’s house fire, though, means that Lily practically has a sister for awhile.

You will enjoy watching Lily learn about life as she grows up and experiences life. Some chapters will make you laugh, and some will make you think hard. This is a very worthwhile book. (And your children will likely be able to relate to Lily in many ways; we had to laugh at her opinion about cooked carrots, since we have someone in our house who very loudly shares the same opinion!)
