A Sweet Singer, by Marla MartinTitle: A Sweet Singer
Author: Marla Martin
Major Themes: Early Readers, Birds, Wren, God
Synopsis: Lee was lonely, sitting on the porch, until God sent a bird to sing to him.

I remember reading this book when I was young. A Sweet Singer is a simple tale of a little boy who was lonely one Sunday afternoon. As he sat on the porch, he looked around for someone to be his friend. He felt a breeze, and saw an ant, a cloud, and a cricket. They were not the friends he was looking for, however. Then he heard a bird singing sweetly. He prayed that God would let him see the bird, and when God answered his prayer, he discovered that God can be his friend! He was no longer lonely.

Besides teaching children more about God and His presence with us all the time, A Sweet Singer is a good book for children who have recently learned how to read. The two- and three-syllable words are broken up into syllables to help with sounding out, and harder words have the pronunciation in parentheses following the word. The vocabulary is simple. I would say it would be about end of first grade or second grade level. If you need supplementary readers for your child to practice with, this one is ideal. That’s what I’m using it for!
