Blossom Comes Home by James HerriotTitle: Blossom Comes Home
Author: James Herriot
Major Themes: Animal Stories, Cows, England
Synopsis: Blossom the cow has a surprise in store for her owner after he sends her off to the cattle market.

James Herriot’s books for children have always been among my favorite picture books, ever since I first read them when most were being published in the late 1980s. According to Wikipedia, Blossom Comes Home first appeared in 1969, some 15 years before the next of his children’s books! Blossom Comes Home is a lovely story of a farmer who had to send one of his old cows to market when she was no longer paying her way. Blossom, the cow, had a different idea, however, and when the drover’s back was turned she made her way back home. Would the farmer relent and keep her? Ruth Brown’s gorgeous paintings illustrate this story beautifully. The book would be worth buying just for the pictures, but the story itself is wonderful, too.

Note: This story also appears in Treasury of Inspirational Stories for Children, by James Herriot.
