Synopsis: The life of D. L. Moody, American evangelist, is recounted in a captivating way.
I have heard a lot about Dwight Lyman Moody, but I don’t believe I have ever read a biography of him. D. L. Moody: The American Evangelist was a fascinating read. I enjoyed it all the way through. Dwight was born in 1837 in Massachusetts. As a young boy, his father died and his mother struggled to feed her family. The children ended up being sent to live with other people, and Dwight set out to find his own way in life at only 17 years of age.
Dwight Moody’s mother was a Unitarian who taught her children from the Bible every day, but the boy daydreamed through her teaching and learned very little. After leaving home, he started going to a Sunday School in Boston and one day Jesus became very real to him. Soon, he had two goals—to make money, and to share his faith in Jesus. He found himself working with boys, and soon had a large ministry. In 1867 he made his first trip to England, and met a man who changed his life forever. After Dwight’s return to Chicago, this man followed him and preached in Dwight’s church. The startling part of that was the man’s message—that God loved sinners! Dwight had been preaching that God hated sinners. This realization revolutionized Dwight’s life and ministry. He became one of the century’s most influential evangelists.
I highly recommend this biography of D. L. Moody. His story is told in a captivating way and will inspire you in your walk with God.
