Title: George Washington
Author: James Cross Giblin
Series: A Picture Book Biography
Major Themes: George Washington, Picture Books, American Revolution
Synopsis: With easy text and beautiful pictures, the story of the most famous leader of the United States is told for children.

We really enjoy picture books that tell stories from the past and have beautiful paintings. One of our recent finds was a biography of George Washington by James Giblin. The colorful paintings with which it is illustrated are beautifully detailed.

The first several pages tell the story of George’s life as a child at Ferry Farm. After that, there are a few pages about how he became a wilderness surveyor, and then got married. Several more pages are devoted to his role in the American Revolution, and several more to the life he really wanted to live—as a quiet farmer at Mount Vernon! After that, of course, comes the tale of how George was made the first president of the United States, and finally, there is a page about his death. Every two-page spread has one or two beautiful oil paintings on it.

This is a beautiful book to have on the shelf for its own sake, but even better if you can use it to add to your history studies. I know I’ve said this several times, but the pictures are wonderful! If you find a copy, pick it up for your children’s bookshelf.
