Highlands by Chautona HavigTitle: Highlands
Author: Chautona Havig
Series: Journey of Dreams
Major Themes: Fantasy
Synopsis: When Tony wakes up one morning in a totally different world than he fell asleep in, he has a lot of lessons to learn about accepting himself and others as God made them.

A couple of months ago, I read the first book in the Journey of Dreams series, Prairie, and absolutely loved it. That made me excited to read this next book, Highlands. I’ll have to admit, though, that at first I was a bit disappointed. It wasn’t what I was expecting, and it didn’t speak to me like Prairie did. I ended up reading the entire book a second time just so I could write this review, and while I understand and appreciate the message of the book now, I still like Prairie better.

Tony woke up one morning, shivering, wearing only his underwear, in a snowy mountain forest. What happened? Where was he? He soon finds people and is helped, but it takes him a long time to figure out where he is, and even longer to accept his life, both as it is now and as it was before. The people in this place have a unique indicator that tells them if they are not accepting themselves or others as God made them, and Tony learns to appreciate that. How will he be able to help the people around him? How can they help him?

I really appreciated the way Tony learned about God, what He is really like and how to relate to Him. The faith of the people of Highlands was real and living, very beautiful. What I didn’t appreciate so much about this particular book was the treatment of suicide. This is a difficult topic, and I don’t agree with the view presented in the book. However, a very loving attitude is expressed toward people who have committed suicide, and their families. I did appreciate the depiction of true love and how one who has true love is able to lay down his life for others.
