Title: If You Lived in Colonial Times
Author: Ann McGovern
Major Themes: Colonial Era (US History)
Synopsis: Questions about life in colonial America are answered with interesting text and nice pictures.

I like a lot of the children’s books that were published in the 1960s. One of those which we recently read for my daughter’s Kindergarten history course is If You Lived in Colonial Times. She really enjoyed the pictures and I think she learned a fair amount from the simple, descriptive text. She told one of her brothers about something we read in this book, several days or even a couple of weeks after we had read it.

Each page starts with a question. The first is simply, “When were colonial times?” Then, there are questions about what people wore, what they ate. Some questions talk about school and learning, and others ask about sickness and doctoring. Do you want to know how people in colonial times spent Sundays, and what happened in church? How did people make laws and what happened when the laws were broken? Or, maybe you are curious about houses and what children did, whether in work or play. You can also learn about traveling and sending letters. Or, if you are interested in what people did for jobs, there is a section about that, too.

Most of the questions in this book have a picture to go with them. These are simple drawings that have been painted, in the style of the early 1960s. I really like them! They are not cartoonish, as so many modern books have, but are fairly realistic. My little girl really enjoys studying them, and they help to jog her memory about what we read.

If You Lived in Colonial Times is a great book to have on hand for studies of early American history, or just to leave laying around for people to pick up and peruse when they have extra time. It is very informative, in an interesting way.
