I love Chautona Havig’s books, as you can tell by the number of them I’ve reviewed! The First Adventure is quite different from most of her books; rather than being women’s fiction, it is more for children. I don’t read pirate stories, as a rule, but because of who the author is, I read this one—and, of course, enjoyed it!
Sebastian has never known a life beyond the Vengeance, his father’s pirate ship. He hates the way he is protected by being made to dress as a rich girl whenever there is danger, and he chafes to get off the ship and explore the land. He knows that his father’s crew is feared everywhere they go, but he cannot understand what drives his father to do the things he does. Sebastian, himself, hates violence and bloodshed. How can he please his father when he hates what he does? Is there any possibility that the story told by a crew member can help him to understand his father’s hatred of injustice?
This is a very exciting story for those who enjoy pirate adventures. I enjoyed it, except for the violence described once or twice, although I sure wish the sequel was available! There are many loose ends that have not been wrapped up by the end of the story. We still don’t know just what happened to Sebastian’s mother, and I have a feeling that Jaime’s story is continued on. There is Hector, too—what happens to him after he is left on the island? I hope the author writes a sequel!
