Title: Lords of the Sea
Author: Allison Lassieur
Series: Graphic Library
Major Themes: Comics, Exploration, Vikings
Synopsis: The story of the Viking Exploration of the North Atlantic and discovery of North America is told in comic-book style.
I have never spent much time reading comics, nor have I read any of the new graphic novels. I did, however, get this Graphic History book from the library when I noticed it on their website, and my boys were intrigued by it. They seemed to really enjoy Lords of the Sea: The Vikings Explore the North Atlantic. I’m sure it helped that the topic was familiar to them, since we’ve read a lot of books about the Vikings, and they even named our kitten after Leif Ericson awhile back.
The story told in Lords of the Sea seems to be pretty historically accurate. The pictures and comic book-style dialogue bring the old tale to life. The four short chapters show the Vikings spreading through northern Europe and settling Iceland, Eric the Red’s discovery and settlement of Greenland, and Leif Ericson’s discovery of Vineland, probably in Newfoundland, Canada.
For children who love comics, this would be a great way to introduce history. Most children can’t resist this style of book.
Reading Independently—Ages 7 – 9, 8 – 12
