Mary Jones and Her Bible by Mary RopesTitle: Mary Jones and Her Bible
Author: Mary Ropes
Major Themes: Bible, Wales
Synopsis: Her intense desire to have a Bible of her own motivated Mary Jones to sacrifice and save for many years.

One of the books my parents bought me when I was young was Mary Jones and Her Bible, a version of the story translated by Mary Carter. Unfortunately, that book is out of print; I’ve never come across another copy of it. Thankfully, Mary Ropes has also written the story of the young girl who did so much to make the Bible available around the world, although I’ll have to say that her version is not quite so interesting as the one I had when I was young.

Mary Jones was the daughter of poor weavers in Wales. She had to do much of the work around the house, while her parents wove cloth to make a living for the small family. Mary’s greatest joy was to go to church meetings with her mother, and she longed to be able to read the Bible for herself. There were just two problems that stood in her way. She could not read—there was no school in her village—and the family had no Bible.

Mary prayed that a way would open up for her to learn to read, and when she was 10, a school was opened in her village! Soon she could read, and a friendly nearby farmwife allowed her to read the Bible in her house. Mary began praying, and saving every penny she could, to buy her own Bible. After six long, hard years of hard work and saving, Mary finally had enough to buy a Bible—but the nearest place to obtain one was a 25-mile walk away! And would there be one when she arrived at her destination?

Because of Mary’s sacrifice and hard work to get a Bible for herself, the British and Foreign Bible Society was started to print and distribute Bibles around the world. To this day, people are being blessed because of the faith and determination of one young Welsh girl! Your family will be blessed and encouraged by reading this story.
