Synopsis: The story of a brave Indian princess is told in simple language for young readers.

Because my two older schoolboys were away for a week, I didn’t want to continue reading what we had been—they would feel like they missed out on too much. I still needed something to read to the two younger ones, so I chose a couple of books that were on the list to be read soon anyway, but which were short and fairly simple, so we could get through them in the week. One that I chose was Pocahontas and the Strangers, by Clyde Robert Bulla. I like his historical fiction for children; the stories follow the facts pretty well, and they are simply written.

Pocahontas is a happy little girl, living in her village with her father Powhatan, his many wives and her many half-brothers and sisters. Then, news reaches them that pale-faced men have come to their land. Pocahontas badly wants to see them. When a pale-faced man finally arrives in her village, however, tragedy is about to strike—can she prevent it?

Now, Captain John Smith belongs to Pocahontas. She does all in her power to keep the peace between his people and hers, and to help his people survive. How can she protect the pale-faced men and not get herself into trouble with her father and his people? Young readers will enjoy this story of a brave girl who wanted to help the strangers who came to her land.
