Title: Three Young Pilgrims
Author: Cheryl Harness
Major Themes: Pilgrims, Plymouth Colony, New England
Synopsis: Beautiful pictures tell the story of one family who traveled to America on the Mayflower.

I am really impressed with Cheryl Harness’s books about American history! She has a gift for bringing history to life with beautifully detailed paintings and a story to go with them. Captions are sprinkled throughout the pictures, pointing out more details. I just read Three Young Pilgrims to my 6-year-old, and she really enjoyed it.

This story follows the journey of the three young Allerton children, who traveled to New England with their parents on the Mayflower. The sea voyage was long and hard, and then the first winter was even longer and harder. The three children and their father lived—but Mother and the new baby both died. The children were very sad, but when spring came they cheered up and helped their father to do what had to be done for survival. The summer went well, and when fall arrived and there was a good harvest, the surviving Saints and Strangers invited their Indian friends for a feast.

Three Young Pilgrims briefly and simply tells about the hardships endured by the passengers of the Mayflower during their first year. At the end of the book are a few pages of information. One is a painting of all of the Saints (Puritans) who traveled on the ship, with their names and whether or not they survived the first winter; the next page does the same with the Strangers (people who came merely for economic reasons) and the last double-page spread gives information about the Indians and the foods they enjoyed. With the wealth of information in this book, and the beautiful pictures, this is a book that children will enjoy studying over and over!
