Who is God? And Can I Really Know Him?

Title: Who is God? And Can I Really Know Him?
Author: John Hay and David Webb
Series: What We Believe Volume 1
Major Themes: Bible Study, Devotions, God
Synopsis: Ten lessons take preteens through a study of who God is, helping them to develop a Godly worldview.
I have used an ever-growing number of science textbooks from Apologia over the course of the past few years, and really appreciated each one. When I saw that they had also published a couple of textbooks teaching a Biblical worldview of God and truth, I knew they would probably be quite good as well, so I was excited to find them used. We have now read through the first volume, Who is God? It is, indeed, very worthwhile reading.
This hardcover book is divided into 10 lessons. Each of these lessons begins with The Big Idea, which introduces the topic for that lesson. Then, there is a story about a couple of children, one of whom is a Christian and the other is not. The first series of stories, about two boys in Colorado, goes through the first six chapters, and the last four chapters include stories about a boy and girl in Hawaii. Both stories include some exciting things—camping trips in the mountains, and a volcano that erupts, and in both stories, the Christian parents teach the children a lot about God.
The topics covered in the lessons begin with thoughts about where I am building my life, and how can I know what is true. Then, we move on to learning what God is like, who the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are, and why the world isn’t perfect if God created it. From there, we think about why God created me, if God will meet all my needs, and why sin keeps me from knowing God. Finally, the book is wrapped up with a study of whether Jesus is the only way to God. The lessons each have an average of 15 sections, and end with a prayer and a picture of the House of Truth that each of us needs to build for ourselves, with each lesson adding a foundation or a pillar.
This is a very good resource for families who want their children to develop a Godly worldview. We read through it together, using it for morning devotions as we began our schoolday. We just discussed the questions, but we would have gotten more out of it, I know, if we had written down the answers.
WARNING: Page 105 encourages patriotism, which we don’t agree with, as Christians are to be part of a separate kingdom (John 18:36, among others). Page 126 shows a portion of a painting of the expulsion from Eden, with more skin showing than I am comfortable with.
